Avoiding an Attack
If a character’s target is aware of the attack, he or she may attempt to dodge the attack to avoid damage. A character equipped with a melee weapon may attempt to parry an incoming melee attack with a Combat + Melee roll, or dodge with a Combat + Defense roll. If a character has cover, he or she may avoid a ranged attack by rolling a Combat + Ranged or Combat + Defense roll. Every success reduces the damage by 1. If the damage is reduced to 0 or less, then the attack is successfully dodged. Any leftover damage is rolled against Toughness as normal.
A character can only make a roll to defend an attack in this manner once per round without penalty. If a character chooses to make more than one defensive roll in a round, he or she must do so at a cumulative -2 penalty that applies to all rolls during his or her next round. Also, a character may not take more than a single action next round.
